In 1953 the communist government decided to rename the Zchopau factory to VEB Motorrad Zschopau, in short form: MZ. Soon the trade names of motorcycles were also changed to MZ. "MZ" make was continued even after the Zchopau factory was closed in late 70s, and production was moved to Hohndorf. After 1991 the company was closed, but after six months it was revived as Motorrad und Zweiradwerk GmbH; since this time their motorcycles are sold under "MuZ" name.
